Ice Straight Point is a little port town built to accommodate the growing cruise industry. We were one of the fortunate few who got to go aboard a smaller vessel on the Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explore excursion. This smaller ship was able to maneuver into areas that the large cruise ships cannot. Our incredible pilot flew us above the Misty Fjords National Monument and we saw the most breathtaking sites!
Lunch is served in a heated pavilion, and staff also stoke a roaring campfire to help you beat the chill and relax. You'll need to buy a one-day fishing license from the captain of the small boat for $15 cash, as required by Alaska law. The beer was good, but we would have liked to see the town a little more. Unfortunately, everything was closed as soon as we got off the ship and we didn’t have time to see anything else after the excursion. College Fjord is the meeting place where many of Alaska’s glaciers congregate and flow to the ocean. At the water’s edge are massive valley glaciers and dozens of smaller monuments that dot the mountainous region. Thanks to the professors who first settled here in 1899, many of these glaciers are named after the country’s best institutions of higher learning, such as Harvard Glacier.
